Meet Tom
Meet Tom Shupe, founder of MVP Chess LLC, dedicated to providing high-value chess coaching at an affordable price. Tom's passion for chess drives him to play on Chess.com, coach at local elementary schools, create educational content on YouTube, and compete in over-the-board tournaments. He also offers private lessons to tournament players globally, helping them enhance their skills and reach their full potential.
His journey into chess began as an adult at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City, where he competed in his first tournament at 29 years old. Despite balancing career, family obligations, and overcoming a physical disability, Tom achieved his goal of breaking USCF 2000 through years of dedication.
Prior to founding MVP Chess, Tom amassed over 15 years of experience in the finance industry, holding roles in regulatory oversight and investment banking at prominent financial institutions. He earned a master’s degree from UPenn and bachelor’s degree from Syracuse. Tom resides in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife, daughter, and cat, aptly named Chess.
